September 15th, 2009 - miRBase microRNA Sequence Database Updated to Release 14

The latest version (14) of the miRBase sequence database for known miRNAs was released today (http://www.mirbase.org).

The miRBase database has moved to a new location at http://www.mirbase.org/, hosted in the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Manchester. miRBase in Manchester is now funded by the BBSRC. The miRBase Targets site and pipeline have devolved into the Enright research group at EBI under the name MicroCosm (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/enright-srv/microcosm/htdocs/targets/). All pre-existing Sanger site URLs should forward to their new locations. Please update your links, and note the new contact email address (mirbase@manchester.ac.uk). miRBase 14 is now available at http://www.mirbase.org/. Please see the README for the new release at ftp://mirbase.org/pub/mirbase/CURRENT/README.

With release 14, the miRBase sequence database has broken through the 10000 entries barrier!

With the addition of 1580 new mature miR and miR* sequences, the miRBase microRNA Sequence Database (miRBase) announced a significant update to the miRBase sequence database which has now topped 10,000 entries.  This latest release is miRBase version 14 and features a total of 10,581 mature miRNA sequences. The number of verified microRNAs has increased from 9,539 to 10,883 hairpin precursor miRNAs in 115 species.  Many sequences have been updated or revised. New sequences have been added to important model species - Human (15), Mouse (32), Rat (39), Cow (259), Zebrafish (24), Drosophila (5), Silkworm (36) , C. elegans (19), Arabidopsis (3).  New sequences have been added to Important agricultural species (280 new miRs) as well - Arabidopsis, Soybean, Rice, Maize, Sorghum, M. truncatula. In addition, there are 30 new virus miRs.  For the first time, miRNAs are reported from: Horse (346 miRs), first Crustacean - Daphnia, 5 new plant species – including Apple and Green Bean, 3 new Herpes virus species

This updated probe content is currently available on all of our standard or custom microRNA microarrays.

About miRBase
The miRBase database1 provides a searchable online repository for published microRNA sequences and associated annotation.  miRBase also provides a gene naming and nomenclature function in the miRBase
Registry. The data are freely available to all through the web interface at http://www.mirbase.org/ and in flatfile form from ftp://mirbase.org/pub/mirbase/.
